Best Price-to-Performance AI Models for Coding (October 2026 Ranking)

Short answer

The model with the best balance of performance and cost for coding depends on the job. For the hardest multi-file and long agent tasks, Claude Opus 5.5 ($4 input / $20 output per million tokens) is Anthropic's recommended default and costs 40% of Claude Fable 5.1 or GPT-6 Astra ($10 / $50). For everyday coding, the $2 / $10 tier (Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, Kimi K3.1 Pro, and Gemini 4 Argon until November 30) gives the most per dollar. For high-volume agent work, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and MiniMax M3 ($0.30 / $1.20) finish a typical task for about a seventh of that, with Gemini 3.8 Flash ($0.75 / $3.75) in between. For subagents and bulk edits, Claude Haiku 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna cost $0.10 / $0.50.

Prices are each vendor's official list price on October 26, 2026, in USD per million tokens. Every model below works with one TeamoRouter API key; TeamoRouter bills at or below list price, and current rates are on the pricing page.

The ranking at a glance

"One task" is a typical coding-agent task: 200,000 input and 20,000 output tokens in total, no caching, each request under 100,000 tokens.

  • Both Gemini prices are introductory. Gemini 4 Argon goes to $4 / $20 on December 1, 2026, and Gemini 3.8 Flash to $1.50 / $7.50 on January 1, 2027.
  • Qwen3.8 Max is Alibaba Cloud's International price; its China region charges ¥12 / ¥36.

How this ranking works

No benchmark scores. Vendors report different benchmarks and versions, so their numbers don't line up in one table. The ranking combines each vendor's own positioning of the model with what the same workload costs at list price.

Thinking is billed as output, so a model that reasons longer costs more on the same task. GLM-5.3 and Kimi K3.1 Pro always reason, and default to their deepest level.

Long prompts can cost more. Haiku 5.5 charges five times its base rate above 100,000 prompt tokens, GPT-6 models charge 2× input and 1.5× output above 272,000, and MiniMax M3 doubles above 512,000.

Caching lowers every number but not the order. In a long session most input is re-read at the cache-read rate ($0.20 instead of $4 on Opus 5.5); what remains is mostly output, and sorting by output price gives the same order as the "One task" column. The Claude Code pricing guide works through a cached session.

1. Hardest multi-file work: Opus 5.5 first

Anthropic describes Opus 5.5 as built "for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work" and suggests starting with it for most workloads. It fits changes across many files, unfamiliar codebases, and agent runs where the model plans and checks its own work.

Move up to Fable 5.1 when Opus 5.5 at higher effort still falls short; Anthropic positions it for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work, and it is slower. GPT-6 Astra, at the same list price, is what OpenAI calls its most capable model, for the most demanding work. Both cost 2.5 times Opus 5.5 per task, so use them as an escalation, not a default. Setup: Opus 5.5 API and Claude Code guide.

2. Everyday coding: the $2 / $10 tier

All four cost the same, so pick by the tool you work in:

  • Claude Sonnet 5.5: Anthropic's "best combination of speed and intelligence", strongest at well-scoped everyday tasks and bug fixes. Half the price of Opus 5.5; the natural default in Claude Code.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol: OpenAI calls it near-Astra performance for complex work at a lower cost. The default pick for Codex.
  • Kimi K3.1 Pro: Moonshot's new open-weight flagship (October 24, 2026) for long-horizon coding, with one flat price across its 1M context. It runs in Claude Code too: Kimi K3.1 Pro guide.
  • Gemini 4 Argon: Google's flagship reasoning model for complex software engineering. It stays in this tier only until November 30, then costs the same as Opus 5.5.

3. Cheaper flagships: DeepSeek V4 Pro, GLM-5.3, Qwen3.8 Max

Three Chinese flagships, cheaper than the $2 / $10 tier mainly on output. DeepSeek V4 Pro is a budget option for planning and multi-file reasoning; it takes text only. GLM-5.3 is Z.ai's current flagship for software engineering and agents, with text input, 1M context and up to 128K output. Qwen3.8 Max offers thinking and non-thinking modes, and its $6 output price helps when a task writes a lot of code.

4. High-volume agent work: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, MiniMax M3, Gemini 3.8 Flash

For agents that run all day on tests, migrations or CI fixes:

  • DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (released October 17, 2026; TeamoRouter ID deepseek-flash-1017): $0.08 a task at peak and $0.04 off-peak, a seventh to a fourteenth of Sonnet 5.5. Tuned for agent tools; 1M context, up to 384K output. Details: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash guide.
  • MiniMax M3: the same $0.30 / $1.20, built for coding and agents, with image and video input and open weights.
  • Gemini 3.8 Flash: Google's Flash model for long-horizon software engineering and agents, $0.23 a task, output capped at 65,536 tokens per request.

5. Subagents and bulk edits: Haiku 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna

At $0.10 / $0.50, a task costs about three cents. Both are aimed at high-volume, simple work: tests, docstrings, small edits, and the file reading that subagents do. The catch with Haiku 5.5 is its 5× rate above 100,000 tokens, which a long Claude Code session passes quickly, so it fits better as a subagent than as the main model.

A setup that keeps costs down

Most teams need two or three models: a daily default (Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, or DeepSeek V4.1 Flash on a tight budget), an escalation model (Opus 5.5, then Fable 5.1 or GPT-6 Astra), and a cheap subagent model (Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna).

On TeamoRouter they all share one key and endpoint, so switching means changing the model field, and sending one prompt to several models is the quickest way to test this ranking on your own code:

python
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(base_url="https://api.teamorouter.ai/v1", api_key="YOUR_KEY")

for model in ["deepseek-flash-1017", "claude-sonnet-5-5", "claude-opus-5-5"]:
    r = client.chat.completions.create(
        model=model,
        messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Write unit tests for parse_date()"}],
    )
    print(model, r.usage.prompt_tokens, r.usage.completion_tokens)

In Claude Code, set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.teamorouter.ai and pick the model with ANTHROPIC_MODEL.

TeamoRouter bills per token at or below each vendor's list price, with no subscription; see the pricing page for current rates. Besides card payments, you can top up with USDT, USDC or ETH from an exchange or wallet (how to pay with USDT).
